Machines Evolve Quicker Than Humans?

The past week I've been battling with my laptop to work and give me back my assignments. I lost the battle. Had to get my computer reset, lost my assignments but I got my computer back. Now to redo all my hard work! Good things take time, that why we as human evolve at the pace we have. Have you ever heard of Web 2.0, Web 3.0 and Information Architecture? What about Semantic Web, Internet of Things or Artificial Intelligence? Lets take a look real quick at the evolution of the online machine we use every day, the internet.

When the internet first came about, its was considered Web 1.0. Now this version was very closed off. Essentially it was just a big read only file/system. It was very information based and dictated. Then came web 2.0, now this was the evolution that allowed its users to play around a bit, it allowed creation within itself and was socially constructed. Companies such as YouTube and Facebook hooked into this and provided users with the ability and freedom to create content, share and connect with others in real time. This is the social web. The internet has kind of been in this stage for some time now and only as of roughly 2010 have people considered it to be slowly but sure evolving into what is now Web 3.0.

Now that we are on the same page, lets talk about the other terms surrounding the internet that you may not have heard before. Information Architecture, Semantic Web, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence.

Imagine if a computer could read a webpage and process it just like you are now and self teach? Getting smarter and smarter, evolving. That is what Semantic Web is. Information Architecture is described by uxbooth.com about helping people understand their surroundings and find what they’re looking for, in the real world as well as online. In other words, the structure of the web page or application your are on. The flow it has. Knowledge of where information is compared to our current location.

The Internet of things (IOT) is an interesting concept. Its described as being the interconnections between physical devices, enabling the exchange of data. Be it the sensors on a car through to two computers connected to a shared drive. Internet being the highway for the information, Things being the vehicles/devices.

Step into the future with me, we've covered where it all began, we've covered what we have now. Now its time to see into the future. Artificial Intelligence or commonly known as A.I is the ability for a machine to connect, store information and make cognitive decisions for the best outcome. It is about a machine imitating a human. Essentially this is what people believe Web 4.0 will be. As for Web 5.0, well who knows what the future holds. Look how far its come in the past 30 years.

Web 4.0 and Web 5.0, lets talk A.I (Artificial Intelligence) If we look at the internet now, its not longer just as simple as people create, communication and connecting. The systems we use learn from our behaviour. It takes into account the things we like, the people we interact with, the ages we like, even going as deep as finding out how old the people are that we interact with most, what their likes and interests are. From all this data, the system can place advertisements in front of you in your news feed because you fit the exact identical match for a specific company. If you wanted to, you can use facebook (as an example) to find woman aged 35 who live in Auckland, who like pug dogs that are male and grey, who also like tennis. That is a very specific audience to find, but the system can and will do this. You can go that deep and the system will pick up from your activities if your a match or not. The systems are learning about you by everything thing you do online. A.I isn't just about the internet, its about connecting people with machines.

Perhaps in the future when we wake up, our house will register this and

turn on the coffee? Question is, as we make machines and systems smarter will we become lazier? Have we created the one thing that will create lazy humans or will we capitilise on this technology and dare I say, see a Web 6.0. Challenge and fail a million times, because eventually you will get it, at the end of the day, anything is possible!

Thanks for viewing my blog, until next time!

I'd absolutely love your feedback. Please by all means be harsh. Yes, design wise I can make it look pretty. However content wise, never blogged properly before in my life!

All a learning game, never the less we're all in the same boat or in this case the same paper!

PLEASE NOTE: This is a blog for the purpose of a Massey University paper and is part of an assignment.
